Gifted by nature, mindfully and carefully crafted for you and your yoga practice, the LPH yoga mat is a real piece of sustainability in everyday life thanks to its longevity. LPH virgin wool yoga mats are made from the highest quality merino wool. The virgin wool used for this purpose is sourced from the South Island of New Zealand, as German or European wool is unfortunately not soft and fine enough for our pure sheep wool yoga mats. The merino sheep there have excellent living conditions, are kept free-range on large sheep farms and are gathered once a year for wool shearing.
The sheep are reared without the controversial practice of mulesing , and the raw wool is certified accordingly. The exclusive sourcing of wool from mulesing-free farms (4% of global wool production) is therefore not only more animal-friendly, but also has the highest wool quality with the best possible animal welfare in an international comparison. After shearing, the wool is cleaned of any coarse dirt, washed once, dried, sorted according to quality and then pressed into large bales and shrink-wrapped to protect it from pests.
In Italy, more precisely in Prato in Tuscany, the Merino wool is combed and aligned, woven onto a carrier fabric and trimmed to length. Prato is also known as the secret wool capital of Europe, as a fine wool mill has been established here since the Middle Ages. For several centuries, the looms have been rattling
and expert hands have been creating the finest and most beautiful cloth and woolen fabrics. This is also where the new wool rolls get their robust and non-slip natural latex coating on the back, which is essential for a non-slip grip during your yoga practice.
After gentle drying, the rolls are then transported to Germany to be cut, hemmed and embroidered in the Swabian town of Straßberg. Quality assurance and packaging for shipment to our LPH office also takes place here.
Merino wool is generally known for its self-cleaning and antibacterial properties. It is soft against your skin and at the same time offers breathability and good
insulation. Experience has shown that a virgin wool yoga mat has an above-average lifespan: some customers report using their virgin wool mats for over 25 years!
